“There is a need here and once that is understood, how can one not take action?”
“The extreme poverty was obvious everywhere, but especially in the provinces.”
“Most of all Sunny talked with pride about Cambodia and her people, recognising that there was a lot of rebuilding to be done, and that the future lies in the hands of Cambodia’s Children.”

Karen Butler, Programme Director

Captivated by Sunny’s remarkable drive to help his own people against the odds, one day, Karen went to help him build a kitchen in an orphanage. From that day on, Karen has worked with Sunny to build KaisKids.

Kais Village Community is Born:

At the request of the local authorities she and Sunny began laying the groundwork for a new centre which would offer homes and care for an expanding group of needy and vulnerable children.

Using their own, private funds, Karen and Sunny purchased farm land & a farm house on 7 hectares in Treng Trayeoung village. Karen recalls that the village was then very small with a market, two small schools and a few shop-houses.

Donations from America helped to refurbish the old shell of a tiny wooden farmhouse, providing double storey accommodation, a kitchen and bathroom, for approximately 20 homeless children and their carers.

The community was named after the first child that Sunny helped, Kai. A year later another wooden building was added to increase accommodation and today the site has grown to seven hectares and is home to over 50 children.

In March 2008, the Increasing numbers of young children at Kais Village Community called for the building of a purpose-built nursery. A UK charity and volunteers from the British Army collaborated to build a much needed nursery for up to 40 infants.

In November 2009, the foundations was laid for two new houses for the older children. One of them was funded by a generous donor and the other, by one of our magnificent supporting schools.

KaisKids now benefits over 300 Children. The building of our two new houses is complete and our older children have room to grow!

Time for School!

In one hectic month in early 2005, using donated funds, volunteers and family members, built a wooden classroom to hold up to 40 children comfortably. An English teacher was hired and the local community celebrated the opening of the school with the first English lessons the children had ever had!

Today, on average, the children participate in two English lessons, daily, five days per week. English lessons are mostly taught by volunteers, with an average attendance of 30 students. If you visit the village now, you’ll find the children keen to practice their English with you.
