For KaisKids, child protection is our mission, our policy goal and our responsibility.

Our policy applies to all staff, volunteers and trustees involved with the charity. All children and vulnerable adults have equal rights to protection from abuse and exploitation. Child abuse is never acceptable.

KaisKids is fully aware that children, vulnerable adults and young people from every community can be hurt, put at risk of harm, or abused - regardless of their age, religion or ethnicity. Children and vulnerable adults who have additional needs, or come from different ethnic or cultural groups can easily become victims of discrimination and prejudice.

Some of the children who come to us have been abused or have been witnesses to violence and find it difficult to develop a sense of self worth. They may feel helplessness, humiliation and some sense of blame. They may express challenging or defiant behaviour, or may be withdrawn.

KaisKids ensure that this challenging behaviour is managed sensitively and that we carefully rebuild self esteem and reinforce the value that the child has as an individual and member of our community.

Our Policy Highlights

We Will

Ensure that we practice safe recruitment in checking the suitability of staff and volunteers working with our children. We will source CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checks where possible.
Teach awareness of child protection issues and equip children with the skills needed to keep them safe.
Identify and report cases or suspected cases of abuse.
Provide professional support to children who have been abused.
Establish and maintain a safe environment in which children can learn and develop, feel secure and be able to raise issues in confidence
Ensure that all staff and volunteers understand their responsibilities in being alert to the signs of abuse and their reporting responsibilities.

There are 4 main abuses and victims may be children or vulnerable adults:

Physical

Victim is hurt or injured by hitting, kicking, beating with an object or shaken

Sexual

Victim is forced or persuaded into sexual acts or situations e.g. looking at pornography, being harassed by sexual suggestions or comments, being touched or forced to have sex

Neglect

Victim is not provided with, food, warmth, shelter, clothing, care and protection that he/she needs.

Emotional*

Victim is not given acceptance, love and approval. Instead he/she may be subject to constant criticism, blame, shouting and swearing, and be rejected by those they look to for affection.

*Emotional abuse – Cambodia does not recognise this as a separate form of abuse, but as being present in all abuse. For the purpose of this document we are identifying its principles ~ some level of emotional abuse is involved in all types of ill treatment. Emotional abuse has important impact on a developing child’s mental health, behaviour and self esteem.
